Terms of use

The rules for playing Gambit Dungeon, posting scores and supporting the game, in plain words.

Last updated: 17/10/2026

In short

  • The game is free, with no ads, and nothing that changes a score is for sale.
  • Leaderboard scores are checked by replaying the run. Play your own runs, without help.
  • Pick a name you'd be happy for anyone to see: we may rename one that isn't.
  • Supporting is a gift: it gives wings and a few looks, never an edge.
  • The game comes as it is. Greek law applies, and your rights as a consumer stay yours.

About these terms

Gambit Dungeon (“the game”) is made by Nick Kritikos, based in Greece (“we”). These terms apply when you play it or use its accounts, leaderboards or supporter payments. By playing, you agree to them. The Privacy notice says what data the game keeps and why.

A free game

The game is free, with no ads. Every mode, hero, course, lesson, theme and Legends puzzle is free to play, and nothing that changes a score is for sale. It's made by one person: features may change, arrive or go, and the online parts may sometimes be unavailable.

Your account

There's no sign-up. The first time one is needed, the game makes an anonymous account for your browser, with a made-up name. Your account key and short link codes (both on Journey) sign your other devices in to it.

Keep your account key safe: anyone who has it can use your account. There's no email address on file, so a lost key can't be recovered for you, and progress that lives in only one browser is gone if that browser's data is cleared.

Names

You can choose your name: 3 to 20 letters, digits, spaces or the marks . _ ' -, with at least one letter. Everyone can see it, so don't pick one that:

  • is offensive, hateful, sexual or threatening;
  • pretends to be someone else, or to speak for the game;
  • advertises anything;
  • contains anyone's personal details, your own included.

We may change or reset a name that does, without notice.

Fair play on the leaderboards

Scores on the Daily, the Hard Daily and the Weekly are checked by the server, which replays the run's moves and choices under that board's rules. A score that doesn't replay to the same result isn't accepted. Seasons are built only from Daily scores that passed this check.

Play your own runs, yourself: no chess engine, bot or other person's help during a run, and no automating or tampering with the game or what it sends. We may remove scores, or keep an account off the leaderboards, if we believe its runs weren't played fairly. The leaderboards are for fun and carry no prizes.

Supporting the game

Supporting is voluntary. You give what you want on our Ko-fi page, where Stripe takes the payment. A gift is once, unless you choose to make it monthly there: a monthly gift renews until you cancel it on Ko-fi. Ko-fi's terms apply to the payment.

What you get

  • Wings: a badge by your name on leaderboards, replays, co-op and your share card. Each payment gives a month of wings per $3 (at least one month, at most 24). A single payment worth $75 or more gives lifetime wings, for as long as the game runs. Wings go to the account whose claim code (from the Support page) is in your Ko-fi message; if you forget it, message us on Ko-fi and we'll add them.
  • A few looks while you have wings: gold heroes, map skins and a gold frame on your share card, all for display only. Board palettes and piece paint are no longer offered; if you already wear one, you keep it.

What you don't get

Anything that changes a run, a puzzle, a rating or a score. Supporting is a gift towards the game's running costs, not a purchase of the game or its content.

Refunds

For a refund, message us on Ko-fi or write to trailbookgr@gmail.com. None of this affects your rights as a consumer under the law.

Copyright and credits

The game, its code, pixel art, vector chess pieces, sounds, board, writing and course notes are © 2026 Nick Kritikos. You're welcome to play, share your results and share cards, and link to the game; please don't copy or republish the game or its art.

Some parts belong to others and keep their own licences:

  • Puzzles come from the Lichess puzzle database, released under CC0, and every puzzle links back to its page on lichess.org.
  • Legends puzzles are positions from historical games (game scores from the PGN Mentor collections and The Week in Chess), found and checked offline with the Stockfish engine, which is not part of this app.
  • Move validation uses chess.js (BSD-2-Clause). Icons in the vector themes: Lucide (ISC). Fonts: Pixelify Sans, Inter, Cinzel, Orbitron, M PLUS Rounded 1c, IM Fell English and Alegreya (SIL Open Font License).

The legend heroes are inspired by the styles of famous players. They are invented characters, not affiliated with or endorsed by those players. Full credits are on the About page.

Using the service

Don't attack, overload or try to break into the service or other players' accounts, scrape it in bulk, or use it to break the law. We may block access, or hide an account from public view, to protect the game and its players.

No warranty

The game is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, as far as the law allows. Puzzles and notes are checked, but one may still contain a mistake, and the game may lose data, change, or be unavailable.

Liability

As far as the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for lost progress or data. Where we are liable, our total liability is limited to what you paid to support the game in the 12 months before the claim.

Nothing in these terms limits liability for intent or gross negligence, for harm to life, body or health, or any right you have as a consumer that the law doesn't allow a contract to limit.

Changes and ending

We may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed, and for a change that affects you significantly we'll tell you in the game before it applies. If you don't agree, stop playing and, if you like, ask for your account to be deleted (see the Privacy notice). You can stop at any time. We may suspend or remove an account that breaks these terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Greece, and disputes go to the courts of Greece. If you're a consumer living in another EU country, you keep the protection of that country's mandatory laws and can also bring a claim in its courts.
